Ben Stokes, the England captain, has praised the remarkable 188-run opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. This pivotal stand set the stage for England's successful pursuit of 371 in the fourth innings of the Headingley Test against India.

While Duckett's stunning 149 captured headlines, Stokes emphasized the significance of Crawley's contribution of 65 runs. He highlighted Crawley's role in establishing a disruptive and complementary presence at the top of the batting order.

"When chasing a target of 370, a solid start is essential. Minimizing early wickets is crucial, and the manner in which Zak approached the game alongside Duckett was particularly impactful," Stokes commented.

He further elaborated on the dynamic between the two batsmen, stating, "Zak's contribution was immense. Their contrasting styles complement each other perfectly. The left-hand, right-hand combination, coupled with their differing statures, makes it incredibly challenging for bowlers to settle into a rhythm. When they are both in form for an extended period, it can become a nightmare for the opposition. While Duckett scored 149, Zak's 65 was equally significant. He navigated the situation expertly, recognizing when to relieve pressure. Their opening partnership has been consistently strong over the past few years."

Duckett's Mastery Against Spin

Duckett's dominance against Ravindra Jadeja on the final day was particularly noteworthy, especially his audacious use of the reverse sweep. Stokes regards him as one of the foremost players of spin in the world, especially praising his execution of that particular shot.

Stokes revealed that he even sought advice from Duckett during the innings to refine his own strategies against spin. "I had a brief discussion with him about potential approaches to improve my chances. I was contemplating getting forward or back to manipulate the leg side," Stokes explained.

"Adopting a clear game plan and utilizing the reverse sweep was my chosen approach. Although the conditions were challenging, maintaining clarity and confidence in my actions was crucial to dislodge the close-in fielders."

Simple Strategies Fuel England's Chases

This match marked the sixth occasion under Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum where England successfully chased a target of 250 or more in the fourth innings. Stokes believes that their ability to maintain simplicity and composure is fundamental to these remarkable achievements.

"We maintain a simple mindset when it comes to cricket. Ultimately, the goal is to score one more run than the opposition. We strive to keep everything as straightforward and relaxed as possible," Stokes noted.

He further emphasized the importance of the dressing room environment during such chases: "The atmosphere in the dressing room is crucial because the players have a job to do out on the field. Maintaining a calm and relaxed vibe helps to shape the mindset required to perform under pressure in the middle."

"The plan was simple: bat out the remaining overs, and victory would be assured, given the ground's reputation for quick scoring. The scoring rate has consistently been above four runs per over, largely due to the nature of the ground."
